Positive life changes such as getting married or having a baby can also cause stress.<\/p>\n<p>For some people, the solution to stress is to take a yoga class or practice tai chi regularly.\u00a0 For others, running, exercising, or listening to music eases their mind.<\/p>\n<p>In my Muscular Therapy office, people frequently tell me \u201cI hold my stress in my shoulders,\u201d or \u201c\u2026in my back.\u201d However, a <strong>common stress reaction is to clench your teeth tightly<\/strong>. Actually, people hold stress all over their body, from headaches and clenched jaws to foot pain. I want to discuss how clenching your jaws is a common cause of TMJ. Fortunately, it\u2019s a condition that is easy to treat by yourself.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; color: #339966;\">Stress And Jaw Pain<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/jaw-pain\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/jaw-pain-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"jaw pain\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/jaw-pain-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/jaw-pain-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/jaw-pain-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/jaw-pain-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/jaw-pain.jpg 374w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Jaw pain is commonly caused by a shortening of the<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Masseter_muscle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> masseter muscle<\/a>. The masseter muscle (circled on graphic) is the muscle that contracts to enable you to chew your food.\u00a0 Normally, as you chew the muscle shortens and then lengthens as you put more food into your mouth.\u00a0 <strong>How can stress and jaw pain be related?<\/strong>\u00a0 If you are under stress and your teeth are clenched, you miss the lengthening movement. This imbalance causes the muscle to shorten.<\/p>\n<p>Put your fingers on your cheeks so you are pressing into your back teeth.\u00a0 Now, clench your teeth and you\u2019ll feel the muscle bulge.\u00a0 If you clench your teeth when you sleep or you tend to clench your teeth when you are upset, you are setting yourself up for TMJ.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; color: #339966;\">Stress And Jaw Pain (TMJ)<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) pain is a condition where your jaw bone rubs or \u201cclicks\u201d over the bone that is just in front of your ear. It is painful, and over time it will damage the bones. <strong>When you are under stress and clenching your teeth, you are shortening your masseter muscle.<\/strong> A phenomenon called \u201cmuscle memory\u201d will cause the muscle to actually get stuck in the shortened position. The now-shorter muscle prevents you from opening your jaw completely.\u00a0 For example, when you yawn.\u00a0 As you are trying to yawn, your jaw flips over the bone and it hurts.<\/p>\n<p>Several years ago, I had a client who had such tight masseter muscles that a dental surgeon was going to sever them so she could open her mouth.\u00a0 This is a terrible solution because it would mean her mouth would hang open for the rest of her life. Fortunately for this client, she had to get medical approval before she could have the surgery.\u00a0 When Dr. Cohen (the doctor I worked with) felt her masseter muscles, he refused to sign the permission form. He told her that she had to see me first.\u00a0 Fortunately, I was there at the time.\u00a0 It took just 30 minutes for me to release the spasms and teach her how to do the treatment.\u00a0 <strong>At the end of the session she was pressing into both masseter muscles and opening her mouth.<\/strong>\u00a0 She did it easily and without pain!\u00a0 She started to cry because she came within one day of having this unnecessary surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Her life was changed by just a simple self-treatment!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; color: #339966;\">Self-Treatment For TMJ Pain<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/stress-and-jaw-pain-relief\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2521\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/stress-and-jaw-pain-relief.jpg\" alt=\"stress and jaw pain relief\" width=\"125\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a>Here is how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/tmj-pain-relief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">administer TMJ pain relief to yourself<\/a>.\u00a0 Place your fingers as shown in the picture to the left.\u00a0 Clench your teeth so you can feel the muscles bulge.<\/p>\n<p>Apply deep pressure on just one side for 5 seconds. Then release that pressure and apply deep pressure to the opposite side for 5 seconds. Go back and forth until it doesn\u2019t hurt anymore.\u00a0 Then find a different \u201chot spot,\u201d and repeat.\u00a0 Continue doing this until you can\u2019t find any more tender points on your muscle and jaw.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To stretch the masseter muscle, just press deeply into the original point on the muscle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/relieve-hip-pain-after-sitting-driving\/pain-free-living-book-cover\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2385\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2385\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/pain-free-living-book-cover-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"pain free living book cover\" width=\"99\" height=\"138\" \/><\/a>and slowly open your mouth wide.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, you can now see the connection between stress and jaw pain.\u00a0 Stress is a killer, and is the cause for pain all over your body.\u00a0 It\u2019s also important to find the <u>cause <\/u>of stress and do all that is necessary to resolve it.<\/p>\n<p>My book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.julstro.com\/store\/treat-yourself-to-pain-free-living-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Treat Yourself to Pain-Free Living<\/a>,\u201d will show you how to self-treat painful spasms throughout your body.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let the pain caused by stress stop you in your tracks.
