{"id":1447,"date":"2015-08-18T07:00:51","date_gmt":"2015-08-18T11:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/?p=1447"},"modified":"2015-08-17T16:30:56","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T20:30:56","slug":"emergency-treatment-for-calf-cramps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/emergency-treatment-for-calf-cramps\/","title":{"rendered":"Emergency Treatment for Calf Cramps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center; color: #339966; font-size: 1.2em;\"><strong>To Stretch or Not To Stretch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 1.1em; color: #444;\"><strong>Author: Julie Donnelly, LMT \u2013 <em>The Pain Relief Expert<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; color: #444; font-size: 1.1em;\"><strong>Editor: Dr. Steve Chaney<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/calf-cramps.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/calf-cramps.jpg\" alt=\"calf cramps\" width=\"176\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/calf-cramps.jpg 176w, https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/calf-cramps-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/calf-cramps-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 176px) 100vw, 176px\" \/><\/a>A calf cramp is caused by several different conditions, such as dehydration and mineral deficiency.\u00a0 These each need to be addressed to prevent future calf cramps, but when your calf spasms wake you with a jolt at night\u00a0or send you crashing to the ground in agony, you need a solution NOW!<\/p>\n<p>And, stretching is definitely NOT the first thing to do.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; color: #339966;\">Emergency Treatment for Calf Cramps<\/h2>\n<p>A muscle always contracts 100% before releasing.\u00a0 Once started, a calf cramp will not partially contract and then reverse because you stretch, as it may cause the muscle fibers to tear, which will cause pain to be felt for days afterward.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, it is most beneficial to help your muscle complete the painful contraction before you try to stretch it.\u00a0 It sounds counter-intuitive, but it cuts the time of the calf cramp down, and enables you to start\u00a0flushing out the toxins that formed during the sudden spasm.<\/p>\n<p>Your muscle will be all knotted up, screaming in pain, so it\u2019s good to practice this self-treatment when you are <em>not<\/em> having a calf cramp.<\/p>\n<p>Grab your calf muscles as shown in this picture.\u00a0 Hold it tightly, and then as hard as you can, push your two hands together.<\/p>\n<p>The intention is to help the muscle complete the contraction as quickly as possible.\u00a0 During an actual calf cramp it won\u2019t be as \u201cneat\u201d as the picture shows, but anything you can do to shorten the muscle fibers will hasten the completion of the spasm.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center; color: #3366ff;\">Follow These Steps To Release Your Calf Cramps<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Hold your hands and continue pushing the muscle together until you can begin to breathe normally again.\u00a0 Continue holding it another 30 seconds, bringing in as much oxygen as possible with slow, deep, breathing.<\/li>\n<li>Release your hands and keep breathing deeply.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat #1.\u00a0 This time it won\u2019t hurt, but you are helping any last muscle fibers to complete the contraction before you move to release the spasm.<\/li>\n<li>Begin to squeeze your entire calf as if you were squeezing water out of a thick towel.\u00a0 Move from the top of your calf and go down toward your ankle.\u00a0 This will feel good, so do it for as long as you can.<\/li>\n<li>It is now safe to stretch your calf muscle because the cramp has completed and you have flushed out the toxins.\u00a0 Stretch slowly, and don\u2019t go past the point of \u201cfeels so good\u201d.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to overstretch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This calf cramps emergency treatment has been proven successful by endurance athletes who have written to me saying how they could continue their race (or training) without any further pain.<\/p>\n<p>This is a very important tip to share with all athletes.\u00a0 Please tell your friends on Facebook and Twitter, it helps athletes prevent injury and pain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wishing you well,<\/p>\n<p>Julie Donnelly<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #d64514;\"><em>These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
