{"id":1246,"date":"2015-03-17T07:00:43","date_gmt":"2015-03-17T11:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/?p=1246"},"modified":"2015-03-16T09:16:52","modified_gmt":"2015-03-16T13:16:52","slug":"what-causes-hip-pain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/what-causes-hip-pain\/","title":{"rendered":"What Causes Hip Pain?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: center; color: #444444;\"><strong>Author: Julie Donnelly, LMT<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/what-causes-hip-pain.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1248 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/what-causes-hip-pain-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"what causes hip pain\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/what-causes-hip-pain-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/what-causes-hip-pain-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/what-causes-hip-pain-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/what-causes-hip-pain-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/what-causes-hip-pain.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>What causes hip pain?\u00a0<\/strong> The hip is a complicated joint and has a potential for many causes of hip pain.<\/p>\n<p>There is an\u00a0incredible range of motion from\u00a0the synchronicity of many muscles, all inserting at different points around\u00a0the hip and pelvis.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the muscles pull your thigh bone in a series of different directions, while other muscles keep your pelvis in alignment.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center; color: #3366ff;\"><strong>2 Primary Muscles that can be the Cause of Hip Pain<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The iliopsoas and the quadriceps are the two primary muscles that cause hip pain.\u00a0 These muscles rotate\u00a0the pelvis forward and down, causing all of the muscles that insert into the pelvis to torque and spasm.\u00a0 Ouch!<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0the iliopsoas muscle contracts it pulls down on the front side of\u00a0your lumbar vertebrae\u00a0causing you to bend over or it pulls up on your thigh bone\u00a0causing your leg to lift\u00a0in order to\u00a0take a step or sit down.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0the muscle\u00a0contains muscle fiber knots it\u00a0pulls the\u00a0thigh and torso\u00a0toward each other, and when attempting\u00a0to stand this forces a separation, pulling on\u00a0the lumbar vertebrae and also on the inside of\u00a0the hip.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0quadriceps originate on the tip of\u00a0the anterior pelvis and then insert into\u00a0the shinbone, just below\u00a0the knee joint.\u00a0 When the quads are tight they pull hard on the front of your pelvis causing\u00a0tension\u00a0in the front of your hip and your knee.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center; color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Another Muscle that Causes Hip Pain<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The tensor fascia lata,, a\u00a0muscle on the outside of your hip, can also cause hip pain.\u00a0 This muscle merges into the iliotibial band (ITB) that inserts into\u00a0the knee.<\/p>\n<p>When the tensor fascia lata is in spasm (contains muscle knots) it not only causes hip pain, but it can also cause the outside of your knee to\u00a0ache and to feel like\u00a0it could\u00a0pop out of joint.<\/p>\n<p>To complicate the problem, while the iliopsoas and quadriceps\u00a0pull the hip down in the front, tight hamstrings pull\u00a0the pelvis down in the back.\u00a0 This\u00a0causes pain\u00a0in the\u00a0top back\u00a0of\u00a0the leg and at\u00a0the groin. Plus, as the muscles\u00a0pull on both sides of\u00a0the pelvis, this can cause\u00a0pain that radiates all around\u00a0the hip.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center; color: #339966;\"><strong>How to Relieve Hip Pain Naturally<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The bottom line is<\/strong> <strong>in order to relieve hip pain naturally, you need to first locate the source of the pain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The best way to find the source what causes hip pain is to pinpoint exactly where you feel the pain and then figure out which muscle inserts at that joint.\u00a0 This is the muscle causing your hip pain!<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center; color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Treating Hip Pain<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once you know which muscle is causing the pain, treating hip pain is easy!<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Locate the most painful point in the length of the muscle.\u00a0 This normally is the muscle spasm that is\u00a0causing the pain where\u00a0the tendon attaches to the bone.\u00a0 When looking at hip pain, the spasm could be above the hip, below the joint or even directly on the joint.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain deep pressure on the point for 60 seconds.\u00a0 Holding pressure directly on the knot\u00a0(spasm)\u00a0in the muscle\u00a0flushes out toxins and stretches the muscle fibers.\u00a0 When the\u00a0knot is released\u00a0toxins are removed which\u00a0causes a\u00a0void in the muscle fiber.\u00a0 The body fills this void with nourishing blood and nutrients.<\/li>\n<li>Stretch.\u00a0 Stretches are most effective after the muscle\u00a0knots have released their strain on the tendon and bone.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>While it is useful to have a therapist\u00a0release\u00a0your muscles, it is more beneficial to do regular, even daily, treatments (muscle release techniques) on the muscles that are repetitively used and strained. Maintaining healthy muscle tone rewards you with greater strength and flexibility and eliminates pain; keeping you in the race!\u00a0 The process above explains how to relieve hip pain naturally has proven to be extremely effective.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center; color: #3366ff;\"><strong>An Example Of Natural Hip Pain Treatment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/treating-hip-pain-naturally.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1251\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chaneyhealth.com\/healthtips\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/treating-hip-pain-naturally.jpg\" alt=\"how to relieve hip pain naturally\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a>Today I\u2019d like to share with you how to do one of the Julstro self-treatments that we teach on the Julstro Trigger Point Yoga instruction kit. For example, let me explain how to treat the tensor fascia lata muscle which is located on the outside of your hip, between your hip bone and the top of your thigh bone:<\/p>\n<p>Using a tennis ball (hollow in the center so it is a bit less intense) or a Perfect Ball (solid in the center so it gets in deeper) place the ball right where the side-seam of your pants is located &#8211; between the two bones. If you are in a lot of pain, start by leaning into a wall. If you want to go deeper into the muscle, lie on the floor on top of the ball. You may need to move an inch or so to find the \u201cepicenter\u201d of the spasm, but you\u2019ll know immediately when you locate it. Always make sure you keep your pressure to a \u201churts so good\u201d level, you\u2019re in control so don\u2019t over-do.<\/p>\n<p>Once you find the spasm, which is also called a \u201c<strong>trigger point<\/strong>,\u201d just stay still on it for 30-60 seconds. Lift your weight off the ball for a few breaths and then press into the ball again. This second time you\u2019ll find that it won\u2019t be as painful as the first time because you have already pressed out some of the H+ ions that are causing the spasm (and the pain).<\/p>\n<p>Keep repeating this for a few minutes and then slightly move your body so you can find other trigger points that are around your hips. You\u2019ll probably find points that are a little bit toward the front of your hip, so make sure you rotate your body so you\u2019re facing more toward the wall or the floor, and then rotate your body so you\u2019re back is more toward the wall or the floor.<\/p>\n<p>This one simple technique has saved several of my clients from thinking they needed hip surgery! It will help you move easier and with less discomfort \u2013 and often it will totally eliminate the pain from your hip completely.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #d64514;\"><em>These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
